2017 420 Worlds – Day 6 Final Day

GBR 420 Class Class matters, Event Reports, International events

The last one!

We can’t believe that the last day has come. It all started one hour earlier, brilliant hot sunshine and a building breeze. The conditions were perfect. We’re starting to get the hang of this, and it showed in the results.

Jack Lewis and Charlie Bacon was off to a great start with a bullet in the first, pushing to go up the scoreboard. With a 9th in the last race, they finished 5th. Rhys Lewis and Drew Wright found some form in the last race, winning it by more than a leg, making it two bullets for GBR in the under seventeens. Ellie Driver and Rachel Cross have also had a great regatta and continue to quickly improve.

Izzy Davies and Gemma Keers were 8th and 5th in the last, coming a fiercely contested 5th overall. Equipment failure earlier in the week almost certainly cost them a podium medal. Lainey Terkelsen and Lucie Offord were 23rd, with Sally Lorimer and Pippa Jones 29th.

In the Open, Eleanor Keers and Aaron Chadwick were 30th – great sailing from this new team. Alex Colquitt and Robert Giardelli were 34th and Archie Penn and Ben Warrington 52nd.

In all, it was an amazing regatta for GBR and with some important lessons to learn. The Spanish Team fared best over all, taking most of the top places. As the German coach put it “you have to be able to sail in strong wind, big waves and heavy, confusing chop”.

Coaches Neil Marsden and Martin Wriggley did a fantastic job and came away determined to push the sailors more, though Neil did think that one day off has been earned. Well done both and thank you for teaching and inspiring our sailors.

The boats are now packed in the container for their voyage back to the uk. Flights are imminent as we say goodbye to Fremantle, the sun and what has been a spectacular and unforgettable experience. Some would say unmissable!

Our thanks to everyone who made this possible, particularly the Keers and Driver families, without whom we would never have got here. To the 420 Class Association and especially Helen Clemetson who has kept you all informed throughout. Also, thanks to the Coaches who were not with us and, of course, to all of you at home – get training because we’re coming back hungry for the next opportunity to be team GBR.

Best wishes

Clive Wright
